Overview

Our Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery department is dedicated to providing comprehensive care for patients with heart, lung, and vascular diseases. Our team of highly trained and experienced surgeons and support staff at EMS Memorial Hospital & Research Centre are committed to delivering the best possible outcomes for our patients. We utilize the latest technology and surgical techniques to provide effective treatment options for a wide range of conditions, from coronary artery disease and valve disorders to lung cancer and vascular diseases.

Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery including OPCAB: This surgery is performed to treat coronary artery disease, where the arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrow or blocked. It involves creating a new pathway for blood flow to bypass the blocked or narrowed artery using a vein or artery from another part of the body. OPCAB is a technique where the surgery is performed without using a heart-lung machine, reducing the risk of complications.

Valve repair and replacement surgeries & Bentall procedure: These surgeries are performed to treat conditions such as valve stenosis, regurgitation or prolapse, where the valve does not function properly. Valve repair involves correcting the valve structure, while valve replacement involves replacing the damaged valve with a new one. Bentall procedure involves surgically replacing the aortic valve and root and ascending the aorta simultaneously.

Thoracic & Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair: An aneurysm is a bulge that develops in the wall of  an artery. Aortic aneurysms can occur in the chest (thoracic) or abdomen and can lead to life- threatening complications if not treated. The repair involves either replacing the damaged part of the aorta with a graft or reinforcing the weakened area with a stent.

A S D & V S D closure, PDA ligation: These surgeries are performed to treat congenital heart defects, where there is an abnormality in the heart's structure that is present from birth. A S D closure involves closing a hole in the wall between the two upper chambers of the heart (atrial septal defect), while V S D closure involves closing the hole between the two lower chambers of the heart (ventricular septal defect). PDA ligation involves closing a blood vessel called the ductus arteriosus, which is supposed to close after birth but remains open in some cases.

Thoracic procedures including Lobectomy, Pneumonectomy, Decortications: These procedures are performed to treat conditions affecting the lungs, such as lung cancer, pneumonia, or emphysema. A lobectomy involves removing one of the lobes of the lung, while a pneumonectomy involves removing the entire lung. Decortication involves removing the lining of the lung to relieve inflammation and scarring.

Thoracoplasty & Mediastinal Surgeries: Thoracoplasty is a surgical procedure where one or more ribs are removed to collapse the lung in order to treat conditions such as tuberculosis or empyema. Mediastinal surgeries are performed to treat conditions affecting the area between the lungs, such as tumours or cysts.

Vascular procedures like Aorta Femoral and Femoral Popliteal Bypass: These procedures are performed to treat conditions affecting the blood vessels, such as peripheral artery disease (PAD) or atherosclerosis. Aorta femoral and femoral popliteal bypass involve creating a new pathway for blood flow to bypass the blocked or narrowed artery using a graft. This helps improve blood flow and prevent complications such as tissue damage or amputation.

At EMS Memorial Hospital and Research Centre, we are committed to providing comprehensive and high-quality care to patients with heart, lung, and vascular diseases. Our team of experienced surgeons and staff use state-of-the-art technology and techniques to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions. We are dedicated to improving the health and well-being of our patients and strive to provide the best possible outcomes.
